Diary sub-note: 1811. Robert Raikes, founder of Sunday schools, died Dr Ward came again. I got up after lunch & sat in the spare room with Cammie, Edie, Meg, Carol & Penelope. Captain Rose came to tea. We all played Rummy & racing demon after tea. I had a bath.

Diary sub-note: 1889. John Bright, statesman, died Everyone went home. Meg, Cammie & myself were left at school in bed. Dr Ward came. I slept most of the day.

Diary sub-note: 1916. Battle of Verdun begunNew Moon, 6.42 p.m.S.R. 7.3, S.S. 5.26 My birthday. Lost the East Berks match 12-6. Mummy couldn’t come on account of Uncle Mac’s illness. Daddie, Andy & Joy came with the cinema. Had a watch from Daddie & a book from Joy & another from mummy. Had a brooch
