Went shopping with mummie in the morning. Saw Mrs Smythe & met her eldest daughter Mrs Pemberton. Knitted & had the wireless on all afternoon & evening. Mum went to Didcot for a “Fur & Feather” meeting.
Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of a Chow Chow: THE CHOW CHOW. A native of China, he is a distinctive member of the lupine, or ‘wolf’ family, shown by his sharp nose and prick ears. Unlike the wolf, he carries his bushy tail well arched over his back. At one time sailors used to smuggle him into this country extensively, evading detection and quarantine by exchanging him with a mongrel, brought on board by the dealer, who thus came and went with a dog, but not the same one. Chows are whole-coloured, black, red, blue or cream, and have black tongues.
