Diary sub-note: 1883. Karl Marx died
Play[ed] a match against Beaufront. We beat them 6-5 goals. It was the nicest match I have ever played in & the last one away I shall ever play in lax [lacrosse]. I finished the picture of David.

Diary footnote, accompanying a photograph of a Border Terrier: The Border Terrier. These very sporting little dogs are among the gamest, as well as the smallest of working terriers. Their pluck is tremendous, and, in spite of their diminutive size, they will face fox or badger underground with invincible determination. The standard colouring is red, but their relations, the Lakeland Terriers, may be brindled or black and tan. Tails are not docked. Height at shoulder, about 10 inches.
